Artist Statement for 2013 Bachelors of Fine Art Exhibition
My artwork is a message. Its flow, paint and sculpt all create a symbolic representation of the roots that connect us to our Mother Earth. The message is simply that we cannot deny the ties that link us to the environment. The dilemma is that if we continue to destroy the places we inhabit then we will cease to thrive. The artwork I create comes from my heart center where my past, present, and future align. My Native American heritage helps guide the harmonization I try to achieve within my work. I am solely interested in the animalistic, rawness we innately have within us. My goal is to tap inside each person that views my work and relinquishe the pent up connection to the dirt, the water, the trees, and the animals that people don’t address everyday. I want the viewer to experience a feeling of release when connecting to the natural world I create around them. My art work strives to show that beautiful chemistry between these forces of nature.
My work is a compilation of painted renderings that show the intertwining nature we share with the world around us. I use mixed media to show the intersections between human and nature. My interests lie within the internal structure that creates these sacred bonds between past cultures and how we have lost that mentality they had for earth. I’m interested in the cyclical nature of everything we surround ourselves with and how when linking these coincidences we can better understand why we are here.
The sculptures I create are visual playgrounds. I want messages of mysticism to leek from every crack and every line so the viewer may be provoked to learn and to question. My sculptures are inspired by growths of the earth. Organisms surround us and their beauty inspires me to protect them.
I believe a creative atmosphere is the most important part of my process. To create something that can tap intrinsically into a being and make them feel the secrets of the earth is something provoked by a deeper connection. I strive to represent this connection.

Artist Statement
As an artist in an era full of industrialization, technological advancement and consumerism I attest to the art of simplicity, organic beauty and the process of Reducing, Reusing and Recycling. My art is an exploration into the chaotic world we know today versus the futuristic results of our steady destruction of earth.
The sculptures I create are a realistic puzzle piece to the narrative I create. Just as you and I record thoughts and daily interactions in writing, my futuristic alter ego Dirty Jayde (which I use in many pieces) also records and deciphers the past, present and future by discovering herself and the connection she feels with earth. In doing this she may better survive on the desolate, recovering planet in a post apocalyptic time. Her experiences can help relate to the complexities we face today in a more undemanding way so that the message, “SAVE THE PLANET” may resonate with a more broad audience. I am concerned with the carelessness that humans exemplify by purchasing materials again and again with no regard towards reusing or buying used product. I use found natural objects to create and inspire my painting. The fluidity and movement I portray with paint is inspired by the beauty of earth. I am intrigued by natural art using dirt, leaves, branches, bark, deceased animals and many other types of material I find. I hope to enlighten my audience with the passion and gratitude I share for our planet by amplifying the natural beauty of found material.
I create for the soul purpose of examining the obvious and making it distorted so that you may better perceive reality. Painting, sculpting and performance may be a combined resolution of interaction in my work; this in turn may better open your eyes to multiple dimensions and obscure topics . I strive to inspire thoughts about the right, wrong and beautiful all after you walk away from your examination of my work.
